¿Mi alimentación influye en cómo funciona mi cerebro?
La alimentación impacta el desarrollo, funcionamiento y mantenimiento cerebral.
Una alimentación saludable fomenta la salud y previene enfermedades a corto y largo plazo. Respecto a nuestro cerebro, desde el desarrollo neuronal se pueden distinguir nutrientes con mayor impacto en periodos neonatales y fetales como las proteínas, el hierro, el zinc, el selenio, la vitamina A, entre otros, por lo que procesos como la mielinización son vulnerables
si se presenta algún déficit en los nutrientes necesarios, pueden sufrirse lesiones o cambios estructurales irreversibles.
Asimismo, el exceso de ingesta calórica se relaciona con riesgo de padecer obesidad, así como enfermedades crónicas que aumentan el estrés oxidativo, vinculado con fallas y deterioro cognitivo. Por otro lado, también se ha encontrado que aumenta el riesgo de padecer Enfermedad de Alzheimer, así como fomentar la neuropatología cerebral.
Por el lado contrario, tener una buena alimentación no sólo contribuye al funcionamiento óptimo del cuerpo, sino que tiene efectos favorecedores en el funcionamiento cognitivo incluso en el envejecimiento.
En las últimas décadas se ha estudiado el papel de ciertos nutrientes, así como de grupos de alimentos relacionados con el desempeño cognitivo. Por ejemplo: omega-3, vitamina B, pescado, granos y cereales. Se ha encontrado que una alta adherencia a la dieta mediterránea se relaciona con un mejor desempeño en memoria, funcionamiento ejecutivo, funcionamiento cognitivo general, así como reducir el riesgo de desarrollar deterioro cognitivo y padecer Enfermedad de Alzheimer.
