¿Qué es la Diabetes Mellitus y por qué es importante protegerse?

La Diabetes Mellitus (DM) es una condición de salud en donde existe incremento de glucosa en sangre debido a una deficiencia en la regulación que puede ser por diversas causas.
De acuerdo con la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) la DM es una de las principales causas de morbilidad y mortalidad en todo el mundo y,

 

En México se considera un problema de salud pública por su alta incidencia. Existen 4.1 millones de adultos mayores que tienen diabetes mellitus”

 

Contagio por covid-19/nuevo coronavirus

Las personas con mayor riesgo de complicaciones por contagio de covid-19 son: adultos mayores, personas con enfermedad respiratoria y enfermedades crónicas  que condicionen el adecuado funcionamiento del sistema inmunológico como las personas con diagnóstico de diabetes mellitus (DM).
La Federación Internacional de Diabetes indica que cuando
una persona con DM desarrolla una infección viral como COVID-19 puede ocasionar fluctuaciones de los niveles de glucosa en sangre y desencadenar complicaciones secundarias, alargando así el periodo de recuperación.
Por ello, es importante tomar en cuenta las siguientes recomendaciones que son fundamentales para mantener un estado óptimo y evitar complicaciones de salud.

 

Recomendaciones para personas que viven con Diabetes:

 

  1. Lavarse las manos con regularidad.
  1. Evitar tocarse la cara (especialmente boca, ojos y nariz).
  2. Limpiar y desinfectar objetos de uso común.
  3. No compartir alimentos, vasos, toallas, herramientas.
  4. Limitar el contacto con personas que tienen síntomas de enfermedad respiratoria.
  5. Evitar el consumo de alcohol, tabaco u otras sustancias psicoactivas ya que pueden impactar negativamente en el sistema inmunológico.
  6. Higiene de sueño: determina horarios para acostarte y levantarte, evita sustancias o actividades que pueden activar tu organismo como café o ejercicio.
  7. Dieta saludable: la dieta es fundamental para mantener niveles adecuados de glucosa, establece horarios y raciones adecuadas de cada grupo alimenticio. Evita comida frita, limita el consumo de azúcar y carbohidratos; procura consumir proteínas magras, verduras y frutas al menos tres ocasiones al día.
  8. Actividad física en casa: es un factor esencial para mantener niveles adecuados de glucosa en sangre, recuerda que hay ejercicios que podemos favorecer dentro del hogar.
  9. Plan de acción por si necesitas atención médica: identifica teléfonos de emergencia y una persona que pueda ayudarte.
  10. Toma tus medicamentos: No olvides llevar un control adecuado de tus fármacos, cuida consumirlos a la hora y dosis indicada.
  11. Niveles altos de glucosa: presta atención especial a tu control de glucosa, el monitoreo es esencial para prevenir complicaciones causadas por desregulación.
  12. Si tienes síntomas de infección respiratoria consulta inmediatamente a un profesional de la salud, las infecciones generan incremento en los niveles de azúcar y pueden generar complicaciones importantes.
  13. Suministro: considera tener suministro suficiente de agua, medicamentos y alimentos saludables en casa.
  14. Asegúrese de poder corregir y regular los picos o bajas de glucosa de acuerdo a las recomendaciones de su médico.
  15. Contacto social con tus seres queridos a través de dispositivos electrónicos como celular, computadora, etc.
  16. Salud mental: no te sobreexpongas a noticias, observa noticias de fuentes confiables máximo dos veces al día.
